87010 hauled what was billed as the last official Virgin West Coast diagrammed Class 87-hauled train on 10th June 2005, the 09:38 from London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly. 87002 was "dead in train" as far as Stockport where the loco was panned-up, but did not power the train.

87002 has just arrived at Birmingham New Street on the 16:51 from Euston on 17th October 2006. This train, and the 19:00 return, were regular daily diagrams for 87002 between October and December 2006 as a stand-in for Pendolino sets undergoing modifications. 87002 hauled the really very last Virgin diagrammed Class 87-hauled train on 22nd December 2006.

Following last use by Virgin in December 2006, 87002 was used by First GBRf on Royal Mail duties before being parked in Wembley until transfer to storage at Long Marston. Seen here from the Silverlink Swansong I Railtour on 3rd November 2007.

On 5th February 2008 87002 is shunted by the Group's 73138 into the shed at Long Marston for restoration work.

87002's first main line run in preservation took place on 16th July 2008, from Crewe to Carstairs and return. Here the train can be seen being prepared at LNWR Crewe. 86101 is along "for the ride", for insurance purposes, and to assist with the shunting at Carstairs.

87002's first railtour in preservation was the "Electric Scot Tribute" on 15th October 2008, from Birmingham International to Glasgow Central. The train awaits departure time at Birmingham International.

A very poor photograph, I'm afraid, but this is 87002 hauling 16th February 2009's 6J37 Carlisle - Chirk Timber Train along the Up Goods Loop/Up Slow at Warrington Bank Quay. The train loco 57305 had failed at Walton Old Jn and the 87, which was on Royal Mail standby duties at the nearby Dallam RMT, was utilised to clear the line.

87002 stabled in bay 4C at Preston on 8 November 2009. The loco had worked from Dallam to assist a class 325 mail unit but ended up being left at Preston.
